Hello, my friends,
My painting shown here: "Glen Charlie Cranberry Harvest", oil on linen, 28" x 38" framed, was selected from hundreds of submissions for each of three prestigious exhibitions: Cape Cod Art Center National "2018 Bay State Exhibition", Barnstable, MA; "Providence Art Club 2019 International Exhibition", Providence, RI; Copley Society Winter Member's Exhibition, 2020, "Full Spectrum", Boston, MA, where it was on view in the gallery from February 21 through early June, and on line only after March 1, 2020.
Long a favorite place to visit, a few years ago I was pleased to be invited to see the annual harvest of the cranberries by my friends Bill and Louise at their family bog in Wareham, MA. "Glen Charlie" was inspired by the long view of the bog with long shadows moving diagonally, the red pump house in the distance. The painting depicts the brilliant autumn colors of the bog, with the harvesting machines and pickers in the distance.
As a child growing up in Whitman, Massachusetts, it seemed that nearly everyone had some family connection to the growing, harvesting, or packaging the berries for the market. I can remember my parent's generation stressing the importance of drinking "Old Cran", the colorful tart juice a competitor for orange juice.
At this time of year, we are stocking up enough cranberries to last until next November. With every trip to the grocery, a few more packages are added to our supply. Baking fresh cranberry nut bread is a favorite addition to our holiday celebration, the challenge being the self discipline to refrain from eating the entire loaf in one or two days. It is so good! The berries are added to everything from cereal, to yogurt, to oatmeal cookies, to Sunday morning pancakes, with or without apple slices as a companion fruit.
"Glen Charlie" is available on my website: www.sallycaswell.com. I am pleased to invite you to visit my website and hope that you enjoy seeing my artwork. I shall be adding new work regularly and would be honored to know that you took the time to look. Please don't forget to sign up for my emails.
